The following 6 companies produce excellent lip balms that are free from undesirable chemicals. Some even have recyclable and/or non-plastic packaging!
Lips require extra attention during the cold and windy winter months. Unfortunately, many conventional lip balms are full of chemicals that ultimately do more harm to your body than good, so those are best avoided. Instead, treat your lips to truly effective protection and luxurious moisturizing with the following all-natural lip balms. An added bonus: your lips will be pucker-ready just in time for Valentine’s Day!
1. Fable NaturalsI’m a huge fan of Fable Naturals’ lip balm, not least of all because it comes in a compostable paper tube – no wasteful plastic packaging! Made of fair trade cocoa butter and olive oil, the lip balms come in three delicious flavours – lemon coconut, orange + vanilla, and mint. Fable Naturals Lip Balm, $6
2. Kari Gran
Kari Gran makes luscious, thick “lip whips” that feel more like gloss than balm, but serve the same purpose. You can buy it clear or get various tints that range from subtly tinted to dark. They come in convenient refillable glass pots with screw top lids. Kari Gran Lip Whip, $15-$20
3. Farm to Girl
The excellent lip balms made by this fair trade and chemical-free U.S. company come in cute little plastic-free tins. You can get either plain organic raw coconut balm or several varieties mixed with honey for extra moisturizing power. Farm to Girl Lip Balm, $3.95 - $6.95
4. Rocky Mountain Soap Company
The lip butters made by Alberta-based Rocky Mountain Soap Company are thick, effective, and tasty. Made with beeswax, cocao butter, and shea butter, most are made with 70 percent organic ingredients. There is a wide variety of fruity flavours, from apricot and strawberry to green apple and juicy cherry. The only downside is the plastic tube. Rocky Mountain Lip Butter, $5
5. All Good by Elemental Herbs
All Good Lips is a line of excellent lip balms made by Elemental Herbs. Many contain sun protection (SPF 12) that is free from oxybenzone and contains zinc, as well as calendula, olive oil, and beeswax. Macademics Organic Lip Balm is made with macadamia nut oil, which is rich in antioxidants, vitamin E, and palmitoleic acid (also known as omega-7).
