LOLI Beauty is cruelty free, vegan, and sustainable. It specializes in plant-based skin and hair care that supports individual and community well-being.

One of Treehugger’s Best of Green 2021 winners, the company was founded by Tina Hedges in 2014 and is a zero-waste organic beauty brand. Hedges told Treehugger that it’s her mission to “clean up the dirty business of beauty” by empowering customers with effective ethical products.

LOLI (which stands for Living Organic Loving Ingredients) prioritizes transparency and sustainability in its manufacturing process and retail.

Treehugger's Green Beauty Standards: LOLI Beauty

  • Cruelty Free: Leaping Bunny certified.
  • Vegan: LOLI uses mostly vegan ingredients.
  • Ethical: Ingredients are ethically sourced. LOLI is a member of Made in a Free World.
  • Sustainable: LOLI is committed to zero waste and is a member of the Organic Trade Association.

LOLI Is Cruelty Free Certified

LOLI is cruelty free and does not test its products on animals. The brand is Leaping Bunny certified as cruelty free. All of its products are made in the United States, which enables the company to have complete transparency into its manufacturing processes.

None of LOLI’s products or ingredients are tested on animals. The company sources raw ingredients from around the world and combines them in-house. “Another advantage of our using food-grade ingredients is that they’re not cosmetic tested,” Tina Hedges explains.

Vegan Ingredients

Most LOLI products are vegan and GMO- and gluten-free. The company uses transparent labeling as well, listing every ingredient and its organic certifications.

If a product contains honey or beeswax, the ingredient is clearly labeled and is sourced locally or from an organic vendor.

For each product, LOLI highlights the origins of the ingredients, often describing where the plant was farmed or harvested. This information is easily accessible on the company’s website.

Is LOLI Ethical?

LOLI works with small, local pesticide-free farmers, and regional foragers to obtain its ingredients. The company aims to be zero waste, with food-grade ingredients in glass packaging. Many of the powerful ingredients used in its products, like date nuts, would otherwise be discarded as food waste.

LOLI is also committed to fighting some of the injustices in the beauty industry. The company uses FRDM software to analyze its supply chain for risks of human trafficking. Additionally, it is a member of Made In a Free World, which independently verifies that a company’s supply chain is free of forced labor.

Waterless Products and Sustainable Packaging

Sustainability is one of LOLI’s priorities. Its products are waterless and packaged in food-grade glass so you can reuse the containers once they’re empty. The brand’s labels are made from recycled materials and are all compostable.

In addition, LOLI uses compostable or recyclable shipping materials, and for every product sold the company cleans two pounds of plastic for recycling, making it plastic-negative.

LOLI recently began selling products at Ulta, which requires outer packaging. To maintain its commitment to zero waste products and packaging, the company came up with an innovative solution: LOLI grows mushrooms around upcycled hemp fiber to create trays, which are then wrapped in upcycled hemp paper to form their box.

What’s Next for LOLI?

LOLI is very committed to sustainability and ethical beauty, but it’s a small company trying to grow, improve, and expand its product line.

LOLI recently launched an arnica elderberry jelly, a product line that Tina Hedges plans to capitalize on: “We have clinicals that show it’s 99.9% effective for up to 24 hours at killing all sorts of bacteria: acne causing bacteria, staph…that technology we’re using, we could spin that into home cleaning. There’s so much we can do.”

Fan Favorite LOLI Products

LOLI has a host of sustainable vegan products for every skin type and beauty need. They’re all food-grade and as minimally processed as possible, which means they may differ from the traditional water-based products you’re used to, as the ingredients are very concentrated.

Cleansing Chamomile Lavender Toner

LOLI’s Chamomile Lavender Tonic utilizes soothing hydrosols to cleanse, tone, and hydrate skin all at once. The witch hazel and natural distilled alcohol will tighten pores without drying out skin.

If you want to do even more with your tonic, you can combine it with Loli’s powdered products for an extra dose of hydration in your face scrub or mask.

Hydrating Plum Elixir

One of LOLI’s best sellers is the hydrating Plum Elixir. It’s made of a blend of food-grade fruit oils, including plum and pomegranate, that help hydrate everything from skin to lips to hair. The best part? The plum oil is “upcycled” from organic food waste at a French farm and smells like a cross between marzipan and plums.

The ingredients are all certified organic, and the product has developed a cult following. In an internal company study, 90% of consumers felt their skin instantly hydrated on the first use.

Brightening Matcha Face Mask

LOLI’s Matcha Coconut Paste is the base for its best-selling face mask, made with skin superfoods including matcha, papaya, coconut, and moringa. The powder is one of the brand’s kosher products.

This mask is waterless, like the rest of LOLI’s products, giving you a more concentrated dose of antioxidants and vitamins to boost skin circulation. To apply this mask, mix equal parts powder and water (or tonic) and apply for 20 minutes before washing off.

Soothing Date Nut Brûlée

Date nut oil is an ancient Egyptian skin care secret, and the oil in this moisture-packed salve is sourced from local womens’ unions in Senegal. This salve moisturizes and nourishes skin for long-lasting benefits.

In addition to nourishing skin, this Brûlée can help remove tricky eye makeup and help soothe healing tattoos or scars.

Purple Corn Polishing Scrub

This powerful Grain Scrub uses antioxidant-rich Peruvian purple corn to help smooth your skin. LOLI’s polishing exfoliator is especially useful for breakout-prone and flaky skin, but those with sensitive skin shouldn’t use it more than once a week.

To use this scrub, mix equal parts grain and water (or tonic) and rub onto your face in circles before washing it off with warm water.
