'Tis the season. The season to get really, really stressed out. Or at least so it seems. Seldom do we look back on a situation and think — "it would have helped if I stressed out a little more!" So, if you've got your hands full with holiday planning, shopping, partying and oh yeah, work and life, perhaps a little time out at a non-toxic, organic spa is what you really need. I came across a lovely one in New York's East Village called Priti. Nail spas, which is what Priti primarily is, are known to stink something awful. Between the polish and remover you are sure to inhale a fair dose of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, toulene and di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) while getting your digits prettied up. In fact, pregnant women are strongly discouraged from setting foot in such places. During her pregnancy, Priti proprietor Kim D'Amato received the afore mentioned recommendation from her doctor. As a result, the former model/photographer's rep identified an opportunity and got to work on a spa and line of beauty products that would be eco-friendly and devoid of these dangerous chemicals.
Priti, the result, is a lovely little place that offers manicure, pedicure, waxing, facials and massage using only 100% organic products and non-toxic paints. Fresh fruits, flowers, herbs and organic essential oils are incorporated into treatments for their natural healing properties. Every aspect of the experience is eco-friendly. Old polish comes off using soy based remover, slippers are biodegradable, furniture is made of bamboo and even the wall was painted using non-toxic paint. Everything smells nice and is the perfect antidote to frazzled nerves.
Recharged and ready to get back into the seasonal madness I couldn't resist picking up some last minute Chanukah gifts on my way out. I mean what woman on my list wouldn't want some non-toxic nail polish? :: Priti
