Lantana: Move Over Bamboo There's Something Greener

Lantana has been cultivated for over three hundred years, mostly as an ornamental shrub in gardens. Originally from South America, it has since spread around the tropics, much to the chagrin of tropical farmers and field biologists, where it can devastate the local ecology. On the bright side, getting rid of that environmental problem may actually help the local economies. Local artisans are beginning to craft and sell lantana products, with hopes of taming this pesky invasion by developing it as a useful commodity. (continue for pictures of products)Finding a place to buy lantana products on-line is tough (if you do please comment on it!). But ATREE (Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment) has done some work on developing the market and has some good examples of the types of products which can be constructed out of lantana. And HESCO (Himalayan Environmental Studies And Conservation Organization) has done some outstanding work in their area as well. So, keep your eyes peeled for lantana products coming to your area soon. ::Lantana camara ::ATREE ::HESCO [by T. McGee]
