John Donovan is a freelance writer based in Atlanta. A former staff writer for the Sports Illustrated website and an editor at, he now writes on a range of topics including nature, health, history, and pop culture. 


Donovan began his journalism career at newspapers in Guam, Pensacola (Florida), and Cincinnati, and spent more than a decade as a senior writer at He's covered Super Bowls, World Series, the NBA Finals, Final Fours, and a string of other events. He served as the director of editorial content for for several years. Donovan has covered nature, health, history, travel, and pop culture for outlets such as Atlanta Magazine, HowStuffWorks, and WebMD. Donovan contributed to MNN (now part of Treehugger) for two years. 


Donovan has a Bachelor of Science in journalism from Arizona State University.
