There really is no end to the snippets of useful information that you can learn from CHOW Tips. Having learned about what to do with leftover potato chips, what to do with wilted lettuce, and even what to do with corn husks, cobs, and silks, we now get a proven message for fixing that most perennial of culinary problems—how to stop a half an avocado from browning.

Maybe you eat a lot of avocado salads, or maybe got into grilled avocado guacamole or even avocado fries, but anyone who digs this most nutritious of super foods has probably faced this predicament from time-to-time:

You slice an avocado, use half for your snack, and then put the other half in the fridge "for later". But within a few short days, it's an unappetizing dark gray mess that ends up going straight to the compost.

It turns out that the answer is pretty simple. Just slice it in half, leave the stone in the one to be stored, and then place it in an airtight container with some large chunks of red onion.

I'd be interested to know why the onion has to be red though. Maybe the folks at CHOW are just planning ahead for the most attractive looking avocado salad...
