How Emily Blunt Became a Physical Super Solider for 'Edge of Tomorrow'

With "Edge of Tomorrow," actress Emily Blunt found exactly the kind of role-reversal she'd been looking for.

”In these male-fueled genres, it’s usually the woman who’s holding the hand of the guy and he’s running through explosions leading her, and I wanted to be doing the leading,” she told the AP. “This was the extreme idea of what I ever thought I’d want to do.”

In "Edge of Tomorrow," Blunt plays Rita Vrataski, a super-soldier who decides to help a cowardly Lt. Co. Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) harness his time looping superpowers in a fight against a powerful alien race. To pull off the physical aspect of her role, the 31-year-old says she underwent three months of training in Los Angeles.

“I was encouraged to take up gymnastics, Krav Maga, weight training and sprint training,” she told ET. In addition, Blunt also wore a weight vest to prepare for the suit of armor she would later don on set. Turns out the prop, weighing in at around 85 pounds, was a lot heavier than she expected. “I prepared as much as I could, and then the first day when I showed up and put the suit on, I just thought, 'Oh god I’m going to start crying. And then you get used to it, and it becomes like second nature.'"

As for diet, Blunt says that she was burning so many calories on set and in training that she just tried to eat healthy. "I wasn’t eating kale chips or anything, I was doing alright,” she added.

After filming wrapped, Cruise says they allowed themselves to relax and hit the junk food. "She had trained so hard. ... We ate burgers and passed out," he told USA Today. "It's amazing what she accomplished, obviously with the stunts and the character she created. She is just (expletive) good."

For Blunt, who will next be seen singing opposite Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep in the film musical of "Into the Woods," the experience left its mark.

”I think it did toughen me up in a big way,” she said, “because now I know what I’m capable of.”
