A baby lying face-down will be able to breathe freely on this mattress.

The Newton Baby crib mattress is a fascinating product, with more air in it than actual material. Made of finely spun filaments of food-grade plastic polymer, the mattress core, called ‘Wovenaire,’ looks a bit like a giant chunk of shredded wheat cereal, full of gaps for air to flow through. This, according to the manufacturer, makes the Newton mattress substantially safer than other crib mattresses because babies are able to continue breathing easily if they roll over and find themselves facedown.

From a press release: “An independent, third-party lab tested Newton Baby’s Wovenaire mattress for suffocation risk. The test measured the level of effort needed to get the air babies require while lying face down. Newton Baby’s mattress scored a 2.2, on par with ordinary, everyday breathing at 2.0. To put this in perspective, the leading ‘organic crib mattress’ scored a 75.6 and was determined a health risk.”

If that’s not enough to intrigue new parents-to-be, then there’s the added feature of being able to wash the mattress in the bathtub or shower, fully soaking it to get rid of mold, bedbugs, mites, dust, and whatever else might accumulate over the years. From TreeHugger’s perspective, this is attractive because it extends the life span of the product, making it easier to pass on to other families.

The mattress cover zips around the core, and so is easily removable and machine-washable. It is water-resistant (not waterproof) because, as the website explains, waterproofing would require the use of synthetic backing that “eliminates breathability and increases overheating, creating a breeding ground for bacteria.”

No latex, adhesives, foam, glue, or springs are added to the mattress, which means no off-gassing from toxic chemicals. From the website:

“Newton products have been independently tested and certified by UL to meet Greenguard Gold standards for the lowest chemical emissions. The standards are among the most rigorous in the world to test for the lowest measurements of chemical emissions such as VOCs, and certifies that Newton products help to promote a healthier indoor air quality.”

Wovenaire is a technology invented in Japan but now produced in a factory near Nashville, Tennessee; the cover is made in China.

Since I have not used this mattress for any my children, I cannot speak for the comfort level, though reviews are good. It does tick a lot of boxes for health, practicality, and reusability, which is highly appealing, so it’s probably worth checking out if you’re in the market for a new crib mattress. Newton Baby offers a 100-night satisfaction guarantee, so you can return it if you’re not happy.
