Your Choice of Chocolate Matters (Slideshow)

Crack open a cacao pod and this is what you get: a wet, gooey, sticky (but tasty) mess. You can get this two ways: clearing rainforest, adding weedkillers, planting hybrid plants, and selling it cheap to the middlemen. Or, you can grow it more naturally, in shade so that wildlife still has a place to live, and set up cooperatives to collect, dry and market it.

In our last slideshow from Ecuador, I look at the work of the Rainforest Alliance and Conservación y Desarrollo in changing the way cocoa is grown.
