Love your farmers' market and want everyone to know it? Well now you can vote it your favorite thanks to American Farmland Trust's (AFT) farmers' market contest. AFT is promoting the connection between local farms and the foods we eat with the America's Favorite Farmers' Market Contest. If you love your farmers' market, now you can show it by voting on America's Favorite Farmers' Markets. According to AFT, at the end of the contest a large, medium, and small farmers' market will be awarded a title and win a shipment of No Farms No Food® tote bags for the winning market managers to distribute to the shoppers that made it happen. You can vote until midnight on August 8. The winners will be announced thereafter.
More and more people are headed back to the farmers' market according to the most recent USDA Census of Agriculture, which reported that nearly $1.2 billion stayed in local communities from direct to consumer sales--up 49 percent since 2002.
Go Beyond Just Buying Locally
But shopping locally is just the first step. As Sami wrote, make sure that you're a green local shopper. Buying local food and supporting local producers is beneficial and much easier on the planet, but it doesn't end there. Even when we buy local, we need to make efforts to do it in the most responsible way. That means refusing excess bags and taking your own, it means biking, busing, or carpooling when possible, and it means asking questions about how your food was grown.
