Save the guilt for that second piece of pumpkin pie.According to Mother Nature Network, the market for carbon neutral wines has expanded tremendously since Collin wrote that Grove Mill Winery became the first carbon neutral winery back in 2006.
The list included Australia's first carbon neutral winery, Cullen Wines, Cono Sur Vineyards in Chile, Backsberg Estate Cellars in South Africa, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards in British Columbia, as well as America's first carbon neutral vineyard, Parducci Wine Cellars. The wineries reduce carbon emissions through practices like replanting native plants, composting all harvest waste, finding glass produced as close to site as possible, using light weight bottles, and using sustainable irrigation practices. The remaining carbon output is offset through programs like Climate Smart and Offsetters.

Take into account that though these inspirational wineries may lead the pack when it comes to sustainability, if they are flown in from 5,000 miles away you're likely still putting a dent in your carbon footprint. Shipping is the best mode followed by trucking, with air freight coming in dead last. The less packaging, the better, and if you can find good wine locally it's obviously your best bet.
