Much to my surprise, in socialist cheese-eating Europe they rarely fluoridate water because it is considered a government intrusion on personal freedom of choice. Christine writes in Parentables:
The debate is philosophical: does the government have any business forcing fluoride on citizens, especially when it is easier than ever to get fluoride by own's own initiative? This argument does not depend on the health effects. In Europe, the decision to stop fluoridation was made not due to hazards, but due to the activism against this unwanted intrusion on private decisions about nutrition and supplements.
