Hawaiian Licorice Company offers all-natural, mouth-watering flavors

This is candy in its purest form -- certified organic ingredients, zero artificial colors and flavors, no preservatives or GMOs.

The Hawaiian Licorice Company is a small business based in Honolulu, run by two mothers, one of whom has her PhD in immunology and the other a degree in nutrition. The company makes all-natural licorice that comes with rave reviews from several years’ worth of customers.

The licorice candy contains no artificial coloring, preservatives, or GMOs. It is vegan, low in fat and cholesterol, and packed with flavor. Yes, it has sugar, which some readers will dislike, but, honestly, who doesn’t love a good piece of candy once in a while, sugar notwithstanding?

As one of the company owners says in a promotional video:

“Our passion for licorice is endless, but we wanted our kids to enjoy it without having to worry about all the yucky additives and artificial ingredients that are found in most licorice treats. As our customers know, we are both foodies and mothers. From the beginning, we wanted to create a licorice that avoided all artificial ingredients and colors – a delicious treat that is as lush as our home in Hawaii.”

The company ran a highly successful campaign in 2014 to launch its line of all-natural licorice, and 94 percent of survey respondents said they were “extremely satisfied” with the product. Now it’s back on Kickstarter for a second campaign in order to deliver expanded flavors (sour apple, sour cherry, pomegranate, sour strawberry) and more of the old standbys (pineapple, strawberry, cherry, black).

So far the Hawaiian Licorice Company has more than doubled its initial goal, which means that all ingredients will now be certified organic and rewards packages will be 20 percent larger than originally promised. If its hits the $35,000 mark, sour mango will be added the production line. (Is your mouth watering yet?)

One reviewer is utterly besotted:

“Each pack has what appear to be long ropes cut up into bite-sized pieces then stacked in rows for ease of packing and consuming. The colors are extraordinary on the fruit flavored varieties. Vibrant, almost alien in their bright hues. As for texture, they’re smooth and softly chewy, not as tough as Red Vines or Twizzlers, but not quite as soft as the Panda brand natural licorice (a childhood favorite). You’re not going to get the Hawaiian licorice stuck in your teeth like other chewier snacks, so that’s a bonus.”
