Grow'em yourself—Shiitakes

It’s hard to decide whether home-grown is too low-tech hippie-geek or completely cool. I’m going with cool, even though I’m pretty clear on who most ‘shroom-growers are (you gotta love that photo). As it turns out, there's quite a fertile mushroom kit industry out there. You can buy the cave, the box, the log, or the bag. You harvest them every 2 to 4 weeks for up to 16 weeks. The shroomers don’t say how much it will actually grow in that time, but if it’s about 1 1/2 pounds total, it’s worth the $24 they are charging, not counting the novelty value. And don’t worry about fungicides, they’re all organic. Think about how you’ll be the talk of the office when you have one of these babies growing on your desk. Yes, the shroomers suggest you grow ‘em there. But don’t laugh at them, they’ve never been to an office. ::Green Living Now [by Tamara Holt]
