British Supermarket Bans Unsustainable Palm Oil

Kara recently noted that the Body Shop is switching to sustainably harvested palm oil; Now a major British supermarket chain is telling its suppliers that it will not accept accept products unless they can guarantee their palm oil is from sustainably run plantations. The Body Shop makes its own stuff so it can control this; For a supermarket, this knocks just about every cheap package of Ramen noodles and Asian import off the shelves and is a pretty dramatic move.

"I don't want to be associated with orang-utan habitat destruction,' said Chris Brown, Asda's head of sustainable sourcing. 'We can wait while committees pontificate, or say, ‘Let's get on with it’."
