SMI says steel is one of the most recycled materials on earth. About 88% of the steel taken from commercial construction demolition sites was recycled and made into new steel products in 1998. SMI has a great example of such a product: their Smartbeam is made out of 100% recycled steel. It's an exclusive cellular beam, which comes in a hexagonal design. They start with a standard I-beam, which is cut in half longitudinally. The two halves are separated, staggered and welded together to form a SmartBeam® that weighs the same but is 50% stronger and deeper than the original beam.
