The CEO and founder of a store selling green products in Dubai makes a grand claim:
We are very pleased to announce that The Change Initiative has received the LEED Platinum certification, surpassing all previous records for sustainability; to take pole position as the most sustainable building in the world.
Certainly getting 107 points out of a possible 110 is pretty impressive. Loek Malmberg, the Chairman of the Change Initiative, (and of the Skagen group, a major investor in both Blu Homes and GS4, the world's largest security firm) continues in AME Info:
Dubai can now also be known for inhabiting the most sustainable building in addition to all the other great feats the country has accomplished. ... we support the UAE's national vision which supports sustainability and environmental protection. Moreover, Dubai increasingly understands the importance of introducing more sustainable practices in order to safeguard its long-term prosperity.
Rick Fedrizzi is a fan.
"Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. "The Change Initiative efficiently uses our natural resources to make an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come."
There's no green hippie vibe here. The architects for the project, HOK, explain:
The stylish, sustainable living solutions displayed in the renovated two-story store include products related to energy conservation, waste management, organic food and various lifestyle items.....The vibrant, contemporary design demonstrates that sustainable materials do not need to have a rustic appearance.
The vision of the Change Initiative is "To become the world's first and largest supply chain dedicated to sustainable human development." They plan to open 25 of these stores across the world. Robert F Kennedy Jr. sits on their board, and has said:
The Change Initiative Dubai will be an exciting and convenient new flagship store for environmentally-friendly services and products. Never before has the opportunity to experience and purchase sustainable products been offered in a single location, nor such a breadth of class-leading solutions for homes and businesses alike.
Just a few months ago, everyone was calling the Bullitt Center in Seattle the world's most sustainable building. Imagine, being knocked off that perch by a store where you shop your way to sustainability by the side of a highway in Dubai.
