10 Gorgeous Green Makeup Products Worth Buying

If you’re one of those amazing natural beauties who can face the day without a stitch of makeup on your face, I simultaneously envy and admire you. Every time I’ve gone completely au naturel, at least one person has given me a sympathetic look and said, “You look so tired!” Best comment of all was, “You look like you’re about to cry.” I want to shout, “This is my face, people!” But instead I say, yes, I must be tired, and swear never to leave the house again without mascara.

Fortunately, going green doesn’t mean renouncing makeup altogether. There are some wonderful products out there made of natural, often edible ingredients that won’t disrupt hormones, fill your bloodstream with carcinogens, or give you a rash. I’ve never found truly safe and green makeup in mainstream stores, so your best bet is simply to avoid the cosmetics aisle of the drugstore like the plague and stick to the Internet. (And there goes my pledge to shop local...)

If the price of green makeup seems high, keep in mind that it’s made with high quality ingredients, not the cheap petroleum derivatives and surfactants that most cosmetics companies use. Good makeup will get used, not hoarded like the baskets of ancient neon eye shadows that we all have in the back of our bathroom cabinets, bought as teenagers and never worn.

Here are my top 10 picks, just in time to refresh the contents of your makeup bag before summer comes:

1. 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascara

Perfect for everyday use, this mascara goes on lightly without clumping and lasts all day. It does a good job of making my usually pale lashes look naturally dark. It also smells fantastic, thanks to the berry pigments and black tea extract. $26

2. Dr. Hauschka Kajal Eyeliner

There was a time when I used those awful plastic tubes of eyeliner that self-sharpened when you turned it. Ugh. Then I bought a sharpener and discovered the wonderful world of wooden eyeliner pencils. This is my favourite kind. It lasts forever and applies a creamy layer of colour that stays put. $22

3. Vapour Organic Beauty Aura Multi-Use Blush

I discovered this multi-use blush in a sample, and now I love it. It goes on as a creamy paste that blends in to the skin, making it look more natural. You can use it anywhere – eyes and lips, too. No tools needed other than your fingertips. $36

4. Kari Gran Peppermint Tinted Lip Whip

This is my all-time favourite lip product. It comes in a cute glass pot and smells heavenly. The lip whip is thick and creamy, and it stays like that for hours, with a pleasant peppermint tingle and subtle pink tint. $15

5. Sappho Pressed Eye Shadow

These eye shadows can be applied lightly with a dry brush or mixed with water for a more intense look. They are made of ground minerals combined with organic jojoba or almond oil and pressed into magnetic tins. Sappho is in the process of eliminating all its plastic packaging, which is awesome. $20

6. Dr. Hauschka Volume Mascara

This mascara does exactly what its name claims – it adds awesome volume, length, and thickness to eyelashes. It’s perfect for anytime you want to glam up your look and doesn’t clump when applied. $29.95

7. Lippy Girl Shazam Lip Shimmer

Lip balm meets lip colour with this funky product. It feels and tastes like a nourishing lip balm, thanks to coconut oil and shea butter, but it adds a whole pile of shimmer to lips. It can also be used as a brow highlighter. $10

8. Dr. Hauschka Translucent Face Powder (Compact)

You can probably tell by now that I’m a big fan of Dr. Hauschka cosmetics, but it’s because they’re just so good! This powder reduces oiliness with a light, soft finish. It also smells good, doesn’t cake on skin, and lasts a while. $33

9. Honey Bee Gardens Powder Colors Mineral Eye Shadow

These powdery eye shadows come in lots of different colours, but I’m partial to the shimmery gold tones that add a hint of glam. (‘Satin Sheets’ and ‘Sedona’ are my favourites.) They can be used dry or wet, and come in tiny, stackable containers. $7.99

10. Vapour Elixir Plumping Lip Gloss

While I don’t notice a whole lot of ‘plumping’ when I use this lip gloss, I do love how it’s not sticky or tacky and seems to moisturize my lips when I use it. $22
