Australia's web servers produce at least as much carbon dioxide as 35,000 cars, according to TickGreen, who offer 100% certified carbon emission offset credits which are applied to the reforestation of Australian government state forests.
TickGreen was developed in 2007 by web designer and surf magazine editor Bradley Hook who apparently realised that web servers are almost always forgotten when organisations decide to reduce or offset their carbon emissions.TickGreen suggest that a basic web server has a power consumption of around 100 Watts and is responsible for almost a tonne of carbon dioxide emissions every year. Times that by the more than 173, 000 web servers, in Australia alone, and you have a whopping amount of web watts that need taming.
Once signed up with TickGreen (annual costs rangefrom $20 for personal websites to $490 for large & enterprise businesses), the initiative buys carbon credits that are registered with the NSW government in their Greenhouse Gas Registry and are fully audited. Participating businesses are then provided with a clickable GreenTick logo they can incorporate into their own website, as a way of educating site viewers about the efforts to be a little greener.
Bradley Hook believes the internet can be one of the most powerful communication and research tools available to combat global warming, but that we should strive to minimise the impact it has on the environment.
