California utilities are taking more of a leadership roll in getting people to cut down on their energy use. The latest step taken by Pacific Gas & Electric and Sacramento Municipal Utility District is to create the Business and Consumer Alliance, geared towards identifying the best electronics for energy efficiency.
...the program will identify which TVs, desktop computers, and monitors are the most energy efficient based on industry standards, such as EnergyStar. Merchandise in stores will be labeled with either a "Save" or a "Save More" label to highlight energy-efficient equipment, said a representative from PG&E;, which is dedicating $7 million this year to the program.
Companies taking part in the program include biggies like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Sears, Lenovo, Dell and Sam's Club. Together, they expect to help consumers save 380 million kwh by the end of 2011.
With California already giving the stink eye to energy sucking TVs, it might be easier than they think to ride the wave of consumers heading towards greener gadgets.
"Californians are some of the most cutting edge technology consumers in the United States," said Brad Whitcomb, vice president of marketing and customer innovation for PG&E.; "As a result, electronics account for almost 20 percent of the total electric consumption by residential users. PG&E;'s Business and Consumer Electronics team saw an opportunity for dramatic energy savings and designed a program based on proven industry experience and customer feedback," Whitcomb added.
Seeing utilities recognizing this kind of potential energy conservation, and pushing for it, is encouraging - we might be in for some actual positive changes in consumer habits, and quick.
