Many of my music students are at home nursing a cold and my sister's children came to Thanksgiving with coughs. Recently, both of my children and myself succumbed to it as well. There are a lot of natural remedies and supplements that you can take when sick, and many of them really do seem to help. What I like about the following recipe is that it uses ingredients I generally have on hand, so if I can't get to the store, I can still give my immune system a boost. The honey is really soothing when you have a sore throat, the lemon juice adds flavor and vitamin C, and the garlic is a great immune booster. (I also consume garlic in its raw state when fighting off something. You can read some ideas here on how to get it down.) I recommend that you use local, raw honey — if you can find it. Most of the honey sold at typical grocery stores is inferior and possibly tainted with heavy metals. Ingredients 3 cloves of garlic, crushed 1 cup boiling water Juice from 1/2 a lemon Honey, to taste Directions Place the crushed garlic in the bottom of a coffee cup. Add the hot water and let steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove the garlic and stir in the lemon juice and honey to taste. Sip numerous cups throughout the day for best results. Variations: Instead of the garlic, add fresh ginger or cayenne pepper (both good for sore throats).
