Walmart fined $81 million for dumping hazardous wastes

After a 10 year battle involving 32 environmental groups, Walmart has plead guilty to mishandling and illegally dumping hazardous wastes in California and Missouri and will pay combined fines of $81 million.

Ignacia S. Moreno, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, commented on the case:

“By improperly handling hazardous waste, pesticides, and other materials in violation of federal laws, Walmart put the public and the environment at risk and gained an unfair economic advantage over other companies.”
