With over two billion pallets in circulation worldwide, it's no wonder that they keep turning up in eco-furniture, whether it's the do-it-yourself or commercial kind. Los Angeles-based company Palletso is of the latter, and was recently started up by Kevin McCorkle, who makes rustic-style furniture and other sundries from safely recycled pallets.
McCorkle recounts how his inspiration first came during a friend's housewarming party, where several reworked pallet pieces (a bed, shelf, planter) got him marvelling at the creative possibility of this plentiful resource. Another few weeks later, after encountering yet another pallet shelf, McCorkle took it as a sign from the pallet gods that he too, should start creating pallet furniture of his own.
McCorkle's pieces take advantage of the various grains and colours of the wood found in pallets, and he uses them to maximum effect by crafting useful items like storage chests, coat rack, bottle openers and even a neat hybrid coat rack and bottle opener ('cause you'll need a cold one as soon as you get home from work).
For true pallet enthusiasts, there's this cheeky set of handmade coasters, shaped like, you guessed it, pallets.
Of course, the Palletso philosophy is to give back when it takes; McCorkle pledges to personally plant a tree for each purchase, to replace the wood that was used to make the pallet. In the future, he hopes to reach out to larger companies by building custom-made pallet furniture, walls and flooring for offices.
