As a society that sits and stares at screens way too much, we know there are multitude of negative impacts when it comes to sitting more than a couple of hours per day. In addition to bad posture, it can shorten your lifespan and age your cells considerably.
Incorporating more movement into one's posture might help, and that's the general idea behind standing desks and other proposed ergonomic solutions. There's also Muista, an "evolved chair" capable of rocking and various sitting positions, allowing you to fidget, rock, roll and saddle-sit, to counteract the effects of prolonged sitting in one position.
Created by Aurimas Lazinskas and Saulius Sestavickasy, Muista comes in various wood veneers and coloured cushions (stuffed with buckwheat hulls). The intriguing design looks like a steam-bent wooden stool and is available in two sizes: a smaller one for regular-height desks, and a taller one that has more 'rock' to it, and an attractive bungee-like cord strung through that acts as a footrest.
Both chairs can be stacked, as well as turned around to allow for "interchangeable saddle and bench sitting positions." Each sitting position works different muscle groups -- you can even do some simple exercises with the Muista during the work day to keep you more active.
The designers write:
The rocking function opens a world of possibilities for moving while sitting, trains your core muscles, improving your body’s sense of balance, stability and coordination. Besides exercising your body, swaying also increases concentration and sharpens your mind. Unrestricted swaying, wiggling and fidgeting will help your mind concentrate while at work and relax in social sit-ins.
Our own real-life tests have shown that Muista makes for a precious companion in face-to-face chats. The fidgeting, swaying and wiggling adds a surprisingly rich non-verbal dimension to conversations, helping you relax tensions and even express your thoughts more freely.
Who doesn't love the lulling comfort of a chair that rocks -- especially one that you can have at your desk? Muista is currently being Kickstarted, with the small Muista starting at USD $180, and a big Muista at $300. For more info, visit Kickstarter and their website.
