Designer DIY Idea: Swinging Bed Made With a Recycled Trampoline

Trampolines are fun, no matter your age or athletic inclination. But what to do when you've got a wrecked trampoline on your hands? Here's an excellent adaptive reuse idea: turn your broken trampoline into a circular swing bed!

We've seen various examples of high-end, designer loungers that are hung from ceilings or tree branches -- and even one boat-inspired lounger that sits amongst the treetops. If you love the look and would like to make a version of your own, it could be as simple as converting one that you have already or finding one second-hand.

UK-based Atlantic Trampolines explains how to recycle the undamaged trampoline parts on their website, where the idea is to

[make] use of the trampoline frame ring, the trampoline bounce mat, and trampoline springs. The trampoline frame has been covered in soft padding and the whole trampoline mat is covered with a sheet. The frame is suspended from the ceiling by strong rope to make a large suspended swinging bed or relaxation area.

This one is an outdoor version, hung from a steel tripod and using a woven rope to form the sleeping area instead of padding.

Atlantic also has some extra tips for do-it-yourselfers: to keep the trampoline frame flat extra horizontal reinforcement may be needed, so be sure to test this before putting on padding. Also, to reduce sagging at the center it's helpful to fully run the suspension ropes underneath the pad and up around the sides, instead of tying them to the frame. Of course, also make sure the ropes you choose and the ceiling beams are capable of carrying the estimated loads.
