Oceana is holding a contest to see who of our ocean's activists are the most heroic of them all. Eight people are contenders, and it's up to you to decide who gets the recognition. But with projects ranging from eleven-year-old sea turtle rescuers to educators with 30 years of experience under their belt, it'll be a tough call. Check out the contestants after the jump, as well as important actions you can take in preparation for World Oceans Day on June 8th. Vote for an Ocean Hero
Voting has started at Oceana for their 2009 Ocean Hero Award. The contestants include:
Andy Dehart : Shark Education Specialist
John Halas : Coral Reef Conservationist
Chanel Gemini. Nika Kashyap, & Sabina Van Tilburg - World Oceans Day Advocates
Emily Goldstein : Anti-Pollution Activist
Lynora Indiviglio : Scuba Diving Reef-cleaner
Jeff "Mr. Fish" Sandler : Ocean Educator
Bob Schoelkopf : Rescuing Marine Mammals
Casey Sokolovic : Grassroots Sea Turtle Activist
You can cast your vote and show who you thin is most deserving of the recognition. But don't stop there...President Obama needs to hear from you too.
Tell Obama to Protect the Oceans
As an Illinois Senator, Obama was the sponsor of a bill that would reduce harmful mercury contamination of our waterways and seafood. A new version of the bill has been introduced in Congress, and we're hoping he'll sign it into law. Please write to Obama to tell him to continue tackling mercury pollution as well as other important ocean issues including bycatch, overfishing and ocean acidification.
World Oceans Day is on June 8, and finally this year it's getting official recognition. So let's be sure to make it a big one!
