UK Teen Driver Tries to Kill Cyclist/ Police Officer, Gets Suspended Sentence. Was Justice Done?
18 year old Benjamin Harrison went after cyclist Martin Melvin with a loaded weapon: his car. (see UK Teen Driver Tries to Kill Cyclist, Who Turns Out to be a Police Officer. Oops.) ""Nine times he almost mowed down Martin Melvin, aiming for him on the pavement, striking his handle-bars, forcing him off his bike into trees, threatening to kill him and hurling stones and coins at him."
Melvin, who was a police detective, had him arrested. The Recorder (a sort of part time judge) gave Harrison a suspended sentence, suggesting that he picked a "bit of an unfortunate choice of victim." The implication is that had he done this to a regular citizen, he might not even have got the sentence he did.
