In April we highlighted the activists who have been courageously working to expose and stop the dolphin slaughter that occurs every year in Taiji, Japan. Over 23,000 dolphins are killed, and many are separated out to go to "swim with the dolphin" programs during a horrific round-up. During Blue August, Planet Green talked with director Louie Psihoyos about his film The Cove, which uncovers the much-protected secrets of the slaughter. Apparently all their hard work is paying off because September 1st is typically day one of the annual killing...but not this year. We're excited to learn from EcoWorldly that this year's slaughter is suspended thanks to a massive number of Japanese media appearing at location.

According to Rich O'Barry, the activist who has been fighting for years to stop the slaughter:

Today is September 1st, the first day of the dolphin slaughter season in Japan. But when I arrived today by bus from Kansai Airport with media representatives from all over the world, the notorious Cove from the movie was empty. There were no dolphin killers in sight.

...And as I was talking with the police, as the international journalists stood around listening, suddenly a camera crew arrived from Japan! And then another! And then still another!

You have to understand that this is SO IMPORTANT. These TV stations have REFUSED to cover the story in Taiji for years and years. NOW, for the first time, they have shown up, with cameras rolling.

We hope that the hard work the makers of the documentary The Cove have been putting in to pushing their film out to audiences has played a major role. Thanks to the efforts of Rich O'Barry over many difficult years, along with all that went into this documentary, we're seeing incredible results in saving dolphins from slaughter this year. We hope the good news continues. We'll keep you updated as more news rolls out.
