Paparazzi hung out in West Hollywood to check out the scene at Stella McCartney's eco-friendly clothing boutique. The occasion: Summer Rayne Oakes' book party for Style, Naturally (her guide to sustainable fashion and beauty) and the hip guests were sipping, nibbling and chatting to kick off LA's Fashion Week. The guest of honor was glowing in Linda Loudermilk's eco-chic Look 13, a striking and strappy little black dress.Surrounded by LA's fashionistas, Summer graciously signed her Style, Naturally books, hands adorned with exotic pieces culled from her chapter on jewelry. One standout was a very large silver beetle ring (after all, the model author is an entomologist) by Kirsten Muenster. "I've come to acknowledge the fact that the choices I make in my own work have an impact," says the designer, who selects eco-conscious materials such as Fordite (recycled by-products from auto plants) and Bowlerine (old bowling balls).
Summer's sustainable accessories included a necklace by Parisian designer Aude Durou's "Ombre Claire" fair trade collection, was a delicate silver talisman handcrafted by the West African tribe of Tuareg peoples. Durou won the Paris Ethical Fashion show in 2007. Wide bangles of sustainable harvested African blackwood from Mozambique by a.d. schwarz lined her wrists. Says the designer, Allen Schwarz:
Poverty is at the root of forest destruction. My dream is to break to economic necessity of such destruction by economically empowering the forest's inhabitants while building a culture of giving back what is taken or used from the forest and the landscape.
Gift bags from Zoe & Zac's shoes for Payless (with biodegradable footbeds, recycled rubber, and organic cotton, hemp or jute uppers), were filled with Ecocentric lip balm, Larenim mineral mascara, and a tagua nut heart-shaped necklace from 100 percent organic Rain Tees, among the other eco-stylish goodies.
