For anyone who’s walked the streets of New York City in recent years, a parked Fresh Direct truck has become a familiar site. Unfortunately this scene has become synonymous with what is best described as extreme over packaging. In an effort to protect its products, Fresh Direct delivers groceries in cardboard boxes that often hold as little as a few items. Subsequently, a food delivery can yield several boxes. Although responsible shoppers can recycle these boxes, one can’t help but wonder if there’s a way to reduce packaging while achieving the same effect. In fact, this question has inspired a contest at ‘there.blogging’. The contest calls for entrants to develop a proposal that would help reduce waste from Fresh Direct and other similar businesses.
