The Sierra Club has been proud to work with our nation's unions over the past few years on clean energy and global warming issues. We even helped form the Blue Green Alliance with the United Steelworkers to support that work.To us, protecting workers' freedom of association is closely linked to efforts to protect the environment. Workers serve as the first line of defense against toxic pollution, chemical spills and other accidents that can devastate communities. Union workers are better trained to recognize the health and safety risks of hazardous chemicals and have greater protection to blow the whistle if accidents or other health risks arise in the workplace.
If you're near Washington, DC, and want to further support this cause, join the Sierra Club at "One Nation, Working Together" this Saturday, October 2, on the National Mall by the Lincoln Memorial.
Over two hundred thousand people from across the country will gather in support of full employment based on a sustainable green economy and rights of workers to form unions. Allowing workers the basic right to form a union and to play a greater role in the workplace is an essential component of building a green economy.
(If you can't join us in DC there are regional One Nation events taking place all over the country. Find one near you by visiting www.OneNationWorkingTogether.org)
The Sierra Club has joined with more than 200 groups to help plan One Nation and to form a broad progressive coalition that will continue working together towards shared legislative and political goals in November and beyond.
We hope you will join us on the Mall or around the U.S. on Saturday, October 2, and bring your friends, family and neighbors!
