October is Fair Trade Month and we should all be singing its praises. Buying Fair Trade not only helps protect the environment, it promotes fair wages, fights poverty, promotes education, and builds sustainable businesses. And as the message spreads, so too do the available products.
Recently, Jimmy Fallon announced Fair Trade Month and followed with an ode to Ben & Jerrys on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. On a recent episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, shown on Mother Nature Network, Fallon talked of the importance of buying Fair Trade certified goods. More specifically, he sang the praises of one Fair Trade product in particular, Ben & Jerry's. His hilarious interlude included his love for Chubby Hubby and Cherry Garcia and his distaste for the brain freeze.
Watch Jimmy Fallon and friends on Late Night:Ben & Jerry's Goes Fair Trade Last February Ben & Jerry's announced it will use only Fair Trade certified ingredients in all of its 58 flavors. The switch will happen in Europe by 2011, and in the U.S. by 2013. According to the company, this involves converting up to 121 different chunks and swirls; working across eleven different ingredients such as cocoa, banana, vanilla and other flavorings, fruits, and nuts; as well as working with Fair Trade cooperatives that total a combined membership of over 27,000 farmers.
But Ben & Jerry's isn't the only company making strides toward Fair Trade certified goods. Be an ethical consumer by choosing Fair Trade certified goods this October and throughout the year.
