Environmental activists and celebrities have embarked on a week long trek up Mount Kilimajnaro (19,341 ft) in Tanzania to raise global awareness of the clean water crisis. Alexandra Cousteau, granddaughter of the legendary Jacques-Yves Cousteau, explorer, and activist--whom you may recognize from Planet Green's Blue August or TreeHuggerTV----is joined by actors Emile Hirsch, Jessica Biel, Isabel Lucas; singers Kenna--the mastermind behind the climb--and Lupe Fiasco, and others are climbing high for a Summit on the Summit:
The Kilimanjaro team has been blogging and discussing the issue of water alongside educators who are leaders at the forefront of global issues. As a team they have been learning of solutions to the problem, discussing how to improve social awareness, and embracing the idea that they are now the example for showing ways to take action and give back to those with little or nothing.
Visit Summit on the Summit to track the trek all the way to the top, watch videos on water related issues, and/or put some dollars towards water projects benefiting the Children's Safe Drinking Water Program, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Water For People's Playpump Technology. The project is helped along by sponsors Expedition Software by Windows 7, extends battery life for portable computers; HP--watch a cool commercial with Lupe, Alexandra, and Kenna--First Ascent, Eddie Bauer's new line of expedition quality mountaineering gear and apparel, and Procter & Gamble.
The documentary of the climb is set to run on March 14, 9pm/8pm CST on MTV.
Updated on 3/15/10: Mt. Kilimanjaro's height was inaccurate.
