Tonight at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, Gisele Bündchen and Don Cheadle will co-host the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Champions of the Earth 2011 Awards, during which they will announce the launch of the World Environment Day Challenge! As part of the WED Challenge, between today and World Environment Day, on June 5, people can join Gisele, Don and UNEP in helping to plant a new forest! Here's how it works:

One of UNEP's goals for WED is to encourage people to make more sustainable choices in their lives. Many of you are doing more than the average person when it comes to making smart, sustainable choices, but by visiting vising the WED Challenge site & telling UNEP about some of your actions you will help add to the total number of trees Gisele, Don and UNEP will be planting.

In addition to challenging all of us to put some effort into choosing to live a more sustainable life, to make the competition more interesting, Gisele and Don have challenged one another to see who can get the most people to take an action this month in the run-up to World Environment Day. When you tell UNEP about an eco-conscious action you take, such as bringing reusable bags to the grocery store or riding your bike to work instead of driving, you will be asked to join Team Gisele or Team Don.

Gisele has pledged to plant a tree for every activity registered in her name. And to up the ante, Don Cheadle has pledged to plant two!

How many trees will you help plant this month? Take a few minutes now and register some of your actions or events!

Here's a video from UNEP of Gisele and Don introducing the challenge:

As UNEP told me, there's so many possibilities to the kinds of actions you can add!

"Whether it's switching from plastic bags to cloth bags, car-pooling with colleagues or
organizing a tree-planting day, WED activities can be big, small, local, international,
noisy, quiet....just as long as they're green."

To make it even easier, if you're not sure what you want to do to celebrate World Environment Day or you have done a lot and want more ideas to do more, you can visit WED A-Z and browse a list of ideas.

Tell Your Friends to Join You in the WED Challenge!
If you take an action for WED - and there's really no reason not to! - please share this with your friends by tweeting, updating Facebook or texting your friends a message to encourage them to post an action for WED and help plant trees, as well. Every action you can help register, will mean even more trees planted on World Environment Day in June.

Here are some sample posts you can use as tweets or Facebook status updates:
