About 30 years back it sure seemed like the philosophy of state agricultural extension agencies was to get people to use more fertilizer and pesticides. My how things have changed since those "miracles of science" days. What's happened? A quick read of this nicely done Southwest Florida Water Management District site demonstrates how much corruption TreeHuggers have been spreading around! On lawn fertilizers they offer: "Less is often best. Over-utilization of fertilizers can be hazardous to your yard and the environment". And on pesticides: "Unwise use of pesticides can harm people, pets, beneficial organisms and the environment". These are among the nine principles of Florida-friendly landscaping cited. We even like their motto. "Transform your yard into a beautiful oasis and save water, time and energy, and reduce pollution".
