Eco-Celeb: Teresa Heinz Kerry

The recent Economist article we reported on also mentioned the environmental program of the Heinz Endowments, where Teresa Heinz Kerry is chairman. Originally introduced to John Kerry by her late first husband, she met Kerry next at the 1992 Earth Summit in Brazil. She was responsible for the $20 million grant—one of the biggest environmental grants ever—that created the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment. She serves on its board as well as that of Environmental Defense and the Advisory Board of the Earth Communications Office. And that’s only to drop a few names. Of course, there’s also the Heinz Endowments, with their goals to promote sustainable urban design, advance environmental enterprise and innovation, and protect watersheds and ecosystems, especially in Pennsylvania. She may not be in the White House, but you can bet she’s still having an impact. ::The Heinz Endowments [by KK]
