Coal Exec Challenges James Hansen to a Climate Change Debate

Some think Big Coal is on the ropes with the new ACES climate bill moving through the House. The evidence that Big Coal is getting twitchy and saying goofy things might be this: Massey Energy President Don Blankenship has challenged Dr. James Hansen, one of the world’s top climate scientists, to a debate on global warming. I think I'll put my money on Hansen. In this video, Blankenship says this whopper: "I don't believe global warming is real." Hansen no doubt disagrees. He first rang the alarm about climate change in front of Congress in the late '80s and he suffered censorship under the George W. Bush administration when he tried to tell the public about his findings.

According to the Charleston Gazette, Blankenship said:

…More than willing to invite Dr. Hansen to have a factual discussion about coal mining in West Virginia, which provides thousands of jobs in the state and provides low-cost energy to millions of Americans.

I look forward to hearing from Dr. Hansen, as I’m sure a productive dialogue – not publicity arrests – is what Dr. Hansen, a university professor who values an exchange of ideas, surely, must desire.

On June 23rd, Hansen will join Bobby Kennedy, Jr. for a protest at Coal River in West Virginia. Others scheduled to attend are actress Daryl Hannah, former US Representative Ken Hechler, Rainforest Action Network executive director Michael Brune, and community members in Coal River Valley, West Virginia.
