Coal Country: Enter to Win the Book, Sign Up to See a Sneak Preview
My hope is this superb documentary will shock Americans and create a surge of
urgency that stops the atrocity of mountain top removal coal mining immediately.
-- Ashley Judd
I know it doesn't work as literally as this, but what would you do if you knew that ancient mountains were being destroyed and communities torn apart every time you turned on a light in your home, or flipped the switch on your sound system, or heated up water for tea?
There are a few more steps in the mining-to-lightswitch process, of course, but this is basically the story of mountaintop-removal mining. I want to invite you to attend a sneak-peek screening of a stunning new film on the subject, called Coal Country , and also to sign up to win one of ten free copies of the film's companion book, Coal Country: Rising Up Against Mountaintop Removal , published by Sierra Club Books. Keep reading...Coal County reveals the devastation of mountaintop-removal coal mining to the forests, streams, and communities of Appalachia. Produced by Mari-Lynn Evans and Phylis Geller, the film brings us inside the lives of Appalachian residents who are directly threatened by mountaintop-removal mining, a destructive practice where mountaintops are blasted away to expose the coal; the waste is then dumped in the waterways of nearby communities. As it takes us through each stage of coal mining and processing, Coal Country reveals the shocking true cost of America's over-reliance on coal.
The Sierra Club has teamed up with the filmmakers to organize more than 850 sneak-preview screening parties around the country, most of them between tonight and Sunday. At the parties, folks will watch the sneak-peek DVD, participate in a national-wide conference call-in with actress Ashley Judd , an Appalachian coal activist, and a Sierra Club leaders from the Beyond Coal campaign. To find one near you, click here.
You're invited to attend one of these parties and learn how you can take action to bring a halt to this devastating form of mining.
We also invite you to sign up to receive a free copy of the film's companion book. We're giving away a free copy to the first ten Treehuggers to sign up. The book features notes from the film's personalities as well as writing from Wendell Berry, Silas House, and Denise Giardina and entertainers Ashley Judd, Loretta Lynn, and Kathy Mattea.
If you use electricity, and particularly if you use electricity sourced from coal produced through mountaintop-removal mining, please take the time to learn more, either by attending a house party, reading the book, or watching the videos and reading info on the Sierra Club's mountaintop-removal website.
