In response to the technological threat posed by Sputnik, Grist reminds us, the United States established DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, to spark new innovations in space and military technology.

Now, renewable energy is our space race. Steven Chu and the Obama Administration hope the newly established Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) will help launch the same competitive development DARPA did years ago.Recently, Grist had a chance to sit down with Arun Majumdar, the new director of ARPA-E to discuss the agencies plans for the coming months.
