Remembering John Napolitano

From O2 New York: "o2NYC and the NYC design community as a whole remembers with great affection John Napolitano, one of our first and most dedicated o2NYC members, co-chair from 2001-2004, and charter member of o2NYC's board. John passed away on Saturday May 13th, ending his battle with cancer."

John took part in virtually every o2NYC activity and meeting, whether he was co-chairing, contributing his graphic design and organizational skills or simply coming to share the latest green design resources. He was responsible for much of o2NYC's graphic identity and outreach materials and was part of the team that put on the very successful 2003 Assignment Green exhibit and symposium. o2NYC would not be the same without the perspective and ideas that John gave. He continued to attend and support o2 meetings, events and projects despite the illness and treatments he was enduring over the past several months.

Before his work with o2NYC, John was design director of the Earth Summit Times, publishing from United Nations summits around the world and developing resources for East Meets West, an early attempt to showcase green design excellence. John co-chaired the AIGA NY's Environmentally-Responsible Committee and was a member of Architects, Designers, Planners for Social Responsibility. John also contributed his talents as a graphic designer many of New York City's environmental groups, including GreenDrinks and Design:Green.

We will miss enormously the energetic, loving, witty and creative John who played such a big role in the development and life of our o2NYC community. Howard Levy, John's business partner writes: "Both joker, and serious thinker, John had his unique way of looking at the world, mostly on the opposite side of conventional wisdom." Howard has created a wonderful slideshow in tribute to John. If you would like to receive a copy, please email Kakee .

o2NYC would like to extend our sympathies to John's wife Beth and his family. A memorial service will be held in New York on May 17, and his family asks that friends give a donation to the American Cancer Society in John's name in lieu of flowers.

With love and affection from
your friends at o2NYC
