Just what we needed dept: The pre-peeled, plastic-packed orange
Hurrah, it's finally here! The greatest advance in packaging since the pre-peeled banana! Whole Foods, that bastion of healthy and sensible offerings, brings us the pre-peeled orange! Each one in its own plastic container to protect it! And unlike traditional orange packaging, it's easy to open! It won't roll off the table! And it's recyclable!
Nathalie Gordon, who discovered this, tweeted: "If only nature would find a way to cover these oranges so we didn't need to waste so much plastic on them."
Whole Foods quickly realized they had a problem:
@awlilnatty Definitely our mistake. These have been pulled. We hear you, and we will leave them in their natural packaging: the peel.— Whole Foods Market (@WholeFoods) March 3, 2016
A spokesperson told Huffpo:
A lot of our customers love the convenience of our cut produce offerings, but this was a simple case where a handful of stores experimented with a seasonal product spotlight that wasn't fully thought through. We're glad some customers pointed it out so we could take a closer look.
Then there was an outpouring of anger at Whole Foods from people who have trouble peeling oranges- arthritic, elderly, etc. But that really doesn't hold up- there has always been fruit salad, where you don't even have to separate the segments. Really, it's just dumb.
