My repeated assertions that environmentalism and socialism are not synonymous have certainly not convinced everyone. The fact is that while people from all walks of life, and all political persuasions, consider themselves friends of the environment, it is probably fair to say that the activist green community tends to skew left when it comes to politics. But a huge popular outcry is underway in the UK that reminds us that the environment is everybody's treasure, and everybody's responsibility. John Vidal over at The Guardian tells us that left and right, young and old, conservationists, unions and environmentalists, are all outraged at Government plans to sell of the nation's forests. The usually slow-to-react National Trust is calling this a "a watershed moment in the history of the nation", and is building a coalition of interest groups to make sure British forests remain protected.
