For sheer diversity of approach, you've got to admire all the different ways people are trying to generate power from the waves, tides and oceans in general. Now members of both the House and Senate are urging the Department of Energy to cough up $250 million from the $2.5 billion pledged in the stimulus bill for renewable energy research and development, and put it towards researching wave power:In the letter that twelve Senators sent to Energy Secretary Chu, the untapped potential of wave power was described:
According to the Electric Power Research Institute, ocean renewable energy in US waters has the estimated potential to supply some 400 Terrawatt house of clean power annually, or oroughly 10% of today's electrical demand.
More specifically the Senators urged the DOE,
to direct the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy to provide at least $250 million out of the $2.5 billion appropriated in HR 1 (the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act), to the Water Power R&D; program for enhanced support in the research, development, and demonstration of marine renewable technologies. We also recommend that DOE utilize the resources at is only marine sciences laboratory, and build upon and consider expanding the number of National Marine Energy Centers, to launch a comprehensive Marine Renewable Energy Conversion Device Verification Program to fund and facilitate the development, installation, and validation of marine-based projects while addressing critical issues related to energy resource evaluation and environmental monitoring in representative ocean energy ecosystems.
The letter from the House of Representatives used different language, but hit the same points.
Senators signing the letter: Ron Wyden (D-OR), Patty Murray (D-WA), Daniel Akaka (D-HI), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), John Kerry (D-MA), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Bill Nelson, Jeff Merkley (D-FL), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Mark Begich (D-AK)
In the House: Jay Inslee (D-WA), Barney Frank (D-MA), William Delahunt (D-MA), Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Lois Capps (D-CA), Kurt Schrader (D-OR), Rush Holt (D-NJ), David Wu (D-OR), Rob Klein (D-FL), Jim McGovern (D-MA), John P. Sarbanes (D-MD), Michael H. Michaud (D-ME)
