Bamboo Village Growing in China

Our love affair with bamboo has been well-documented here at TreeHugger; you can imagine our excitement when we heard of an entire village built from it. Well, perhaps built around it is more accurate; what was once a Chinese military base is being transformed into a bamboo-design village. Alex Chui, President of China Source, one of the largest bamboo exporters in the world, has a vision for the village's renaissance as a worldwide epicenter for bamboo design. If successful, it will help create a locally-based sustainable industry, meaning not only a huge clearinghouse for bamboo-designed interior and exterior wares, but employment for rural workers, who won't be forced to leave the countryside for China's large urban areas where they face huge competition in the fast-growing industrial economy. The village is near the northern border of the Guangdong Province, and is the former home of a military base that once housed 4,000 Chinese soldiers. Because of its remote location, China's astronomical industrial growth has yet to affect it.The village is just getting on its feet; their next step is to create a wireless hotspot in the center of the village where designers from Europe, South America and North America can interact with artisans via the internet creating designs in real time. This website has been started to update the world as the village progresses. ::Moso Village
