Republican presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann has said a few doozies in her day, but on Saturday she got particularity devoid of truth with her claims that the US has more energy resources than any other country but isn't exploiting them because of unidentified "radical environmentalists."
It seems Bachmann, who says that gas will return to $2 if she is elected, said with shale oil, natural gas and coal, the US has no need to be "begging" others for our energy. Bachmann said that the US is "the king daddy dogs when it comes to energy."
She then uttered the two most dangerous words in the English language: "President Bachmann will take that key out of the door. I will unlock it."
Let's look at Bachmann's claims on shale gas. Ian Urbina, who is debunking industry claims in the New York Times, published a piece on August 24 that showed that the sector's claims about available resources have been grossly exaggerated.
The shale formation has about 84 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered, technically recoverable natural gas, according to the report from the United States Geological Survey. This is drastically lower than the 410 trillion cubic feet that was published earlier this year by the federal Energy Information Administration.
Bachmann's claims are dangerous and should not be tolerated. Yet the mainstream media continues to report her words as if they were stenographers instead of reporters.
