As children we often drove through Buffalo (one never drove to buffalo, just through) and it was always dire- jets of fire rising from the steelmills , old and tired and dirty. Thus we were impressed to see that Buffalo landed in third place, behind Portland and San Jose, among the cleanest cities in America in a recent study. Depopulation and industrial flight had something to do with it, but so did Superfund dollars, environmental bonds and a lot of hard work.
