AIA Honors Affordable, Sustainable Housing

Sustainable and affordable. We like it when those two words come together... The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has selected "eight examples of excellence in housing design that meet sustainable guidelines, while being both affordable and aesthetically appealing," to receive "Show You're Green" awards. Seattle is the big winner—three of the eight projects are located in this green city. The others are in Chicago, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Vermont, and the D.C. suburbs. To select winning firms, including Wentworth Commons, in Chicago by Harley Ellis Devereaux (above left), and Cobb Hill Co-Housing in Hartland, Vermont, by Jeff Schoellkopf Design (above right), the AIA took a hard look at energy efficiency, site design, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, recycling, and reduced and sustainable material use. ::AIA
