On Monday, the nation's top climate scientist, Dr. James Hansen of NASA, was arrested along with 140 others at the White House. They are peacefully protesting the proposed Keystone XL pipeline that, if approved, would ferry Canada's uber-polluting tar sands oil 1,700 miles across the United States. Yesterday, famed actress Daryl Hannah (of Blade Runner, the Kill Bill films, etc) joined the fray. She too was arrested, as you can seen in energyNOW!'s video above.
Below, check out a video interview with Hannah, in which she explains why she was willing to risk arrest to send a message to the Obama administration:
Right on. I like how Grist's Jess Zimmerman articulated the specific kind of cool reserved for celebrities who are actually willing to put their money where their mouth is: "It can be mildly annoying when movie stars get activist, because it usually just means looking sincere while wearing the ribbon color of the day. Which is why it's kind of cool that Daryl Hannah, who has never really stopped defending the environment since she came out of the ocean in 1984, is headed down to the Keystone XL protests, where people are being arrested left and right."
And indeed, she's been arrested, with almost over 600 other Americans -- and the tar sands action rolls on.
