A graphic refutation of "The climate has always been changing"

Public Domain There was a warm period! Then a cold period!

We at TreeHugger try to avoid discussing politics so instead of quoting some politician who claims the climate has always been changing, will quote the Heartland Institute, which writes:

Overwhelming scientific evidence suggests the greenhouse gas-induced global climate signal is so small as to be embedded within the background variability of the natural climate system and is not dangerous. At the same time, global temperature change is occurring, as it always naturally does.

Perhaps the institute should have a look at the recent work of physicist, robotocist and cartoonist Randall Monroe, who has tracked the variations in the natural climate system since, oh, the last ice age, 22,000 years ago. He demonstrates that yes, the Heartland Institute is correct, sort of. That it started really cold and then got warmer, that there have been some minor variations such as the much-discussed Medieval Warm Period (They were making wine in Scotland!) and the Little Ice Age (They were skating on the Thames!) and then he comes to the boffo finish.
