A nine-year-old girl created a MyCharityWater campaign for her birthday in June, hoping to raise $300 to provide clean water for those in need. Tragically, she was killed in a car accident. The outpouring of grief and support by nearly 10,000 people for her family after her untimely death has created a phenomenal amount of hope for others. Rachel wrote on her MyCharityWater page:
On June 12th 2011, I'm turning 9. I found out that millions of people don't live to see their 5th birthday. And why? Because they didn't have access to clean, safe water so I'm celebrating my birthday like never before. I'm asking from everyone I know to donate to my campaign instead of gifts for my birthday. Every penny of the money raised will go directly to fund freshwater projects in developing nations. Even better, every dollar is "proved" when the projects are complete, and photos and GPS coordinates are posted using Google Earth. My goal is to raise $300 by my birthday, June 12, 2011. Please consider helping me.
Thank you so much!!!
Heartbreakingly, she was recently killed in a car accident.
This week, her mother Samantha wrote, "I am in awe of the overwhelming love to take my daughters dream and make it a reality. In the face of unexplainable pain you have provided undeniable hope. Thank you for your generosity!
"I know Rachel is smiling!"
Indeed, it is providing hope -- over 18,000 people so far will benefit from the funds donated in Rachel's name. While the tragedy is horrible, the silver lining is the help thousands will receive. If there were ever a celebration of life after experiencing a terrible death, it is this.
There are still 26 days left in the campaign if you would like to donate, not only for clean water but to show support for the family that loved this young activist. During the minutes it is taking me to write this post, over $2,000 more dollars have been donated -- the count is up to $378,000.
